Since emerging in 1973 with the hit LP, Piano Man, composer and lyricist Billy Joel has proven to be one of the most enduring artists in the American pop music scene. Over the span of twenty years, he wrote and performed numerous hits in a remarkably broad range of styles, from the ballad-like “Piano Man” to the punchy “Movin’ Out.” In 2002, the director and choreographer Twyla Tharp conceived of bringing Billy Joel’s songs to the Broadway stage in the musical dance production, Movin’ Out.
The show, which featured almost thirty songs from Joel’s catalog, ran for 1303 performances and received nine Tony® nominations, and won Joel his first for best orchestrations and earned Tharp another for her choreography.
