The Revival of ‘Once on This Island’ Begins Performances Today!
A one-act musical by Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), Once On This Island is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid transposed to the French Antilles with elements of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet thrown in for good measure. The result is a charming Caribbean fantasy that premiered at Playwrights Horizons on April 6, 1990, and came to Broadway’s Booth Theatre on October 18, 1990, where it played 469 performances.
